Foodie Friday: Tusker House in Animal Kingdom

Tusker House is a GREAT option if you’re looking for some different choices (a buffet) along with getting to meet some big name characters without wasting park time in lines.

All three meals are served here daily: breakfast, lunch & dinner.  As always, when breakfast is offered, I highly recommend an early reservation to make the most of your park time and for pictures like this:

Yup, that’s with NO one else in the photo… seriously hard to come by and nearly impossible once the parks open for the day!

Tusker House is located in “Africa” which is towards the back of the park.  This is a great vantage point to be at the back of the park when it opens.  Tusker House is right next to Kilimanjaro Safari which is the BEST ride to kick off your day at Animal Kingdom… the animals are also most awake in the morning hours.

Characters have also been added to dinner so you can see them at all three meals!  The most common characters are Mickey, Goofy, Donald & Daisy.  None of these are guaranteed.. changes can be made daily.

The inside of this restaurant is so unique.  It feels as though you are outside in a marketplace.

There are separate stations for all of the different foods offered on the buffet.  For breakfast you’ll find danishes, yogurts, fruits, many traditional items like waffles, eggs, sausage, bacon, cereal, ham, biscuits & gravy along with different items like beef Bobotie quiche & yam casserole.  The jungle juice is phenomenal!!!  It’s a mix of mango and other fruits… so delicious!  You can’t have just one glass!

The characters make their way around to each table for pictures & autographs.  Donald used to get his photo taken outside of the restaurant but lately he has been making his way inside for meetngreets.

The characters lead a fun, musical parade during each meal… kids are given instruments to participate.

Lunch and dinner are a little more adventurous.  There’s still a lot of traditional foods to choose from on the buffet like chicken, mac & cheese, salmon, corn dog nuggets, carved top sirloin & pork loin.  A few of the more exotic options are spiced tandoori tofu, seafood stew, Cape Malay curry chicken, Jollaf rice, Tunisian couscous salad & Tabbouleh.

I would recommend breakfast (early morning before the park opens) if you’re planning on visiting Tusker House.  For lunch or dinner, I would opt to visit Animal Kingdom Lodge where you can go to Sanaa or Boma for some wonderful, authentic African foods. ran

Remember why I said it was so great to be at the back of the park when it opened?  Here’s a picture to show you the crowd that was headed our way (and we were in FRONT of) because of our early morning reservation at Tusker House:

We walked right on the Safari without having to wait… just imagine being in that crowd!

Reservations are highly recommended especially if you want an early time!  Prices run from $30-37 depending on which meal for adults & kids are around $16 each.  Table service credits are accepted for this meal on the Disney dining plans.  You only have to use one credit to eat here!

  1. I haven’t been to the Tusker House in a few years (we went for breakfast in 2009) but it was one of our favorite stops in Animal Kingdom. Great pictures!
